Compare Car Insurance on the Go with the MoneySupermarket Car Insurance App

For people in the UK, using MoneySupermarket to compare the cost of car insurance is second nature, but in the past it has been necessary to head online from a laptop or desktop computer to get the job done.

You may have attempted to use its site from your smart phone or tablet but without touchscreen optimisation it is tough to complete the process of getting car-insurance quotes without encountering some frustration.

Thankfully, Money Supermarket is well aware of this and as a result it has launched its first ever car-insurance price-comparison application for a range of portable gadgets.

There are iterations of the app available for Android and iPhone, with iPad compatibility recently added in a much-needed update.

Perhaps the most important thing to emphasise about this comparison app is that it is the first-ever free app for the car-insurance market on smart phones.

The only way that using the service could cost you money is if you do not have an adequate monthly data allowance with your network provider.

Since you can use it over Wi-Fi networks, which are widely available at home or when you are out and about, comparing car insurance while on the move has never been easier.

There are big savings to be made by those who choose to use the app on their smart phone or tablet, with average customers saving around £374.93.

The process of creating an account when you first launch the app is painless and best of all is the fact that it is only necessary to carry this out once, as the app will save your information should you wish to compare prices again at a later date.

Each version of the app gives you control over the same comparison features, whether you have an Android phone or an iOS device such as an iPhone or iPad.

However, the interface has been modified to make sure that it is in keeping with whichever platform you happen to have, because consistency of look and feel is important to many users.

Because the quotes are tailored to your specific needs, you will be able to see just how much you are going to pay each month or year and you can even call insurance companies from within the app itself if you have a smart phone.

Quote retrieval can be performed from the app or via your PC, so you can get quotes while on the move and then consider them in more detail once you are settled in front of your computer.

The rising cost of car insurance does not necessarily mean that you need to pay more, particularly if you can compare different quotes from your portable device thanks to this new app.

The iPhone – A Powerful Business Tool

One of the more consistent criticisms of the iPhone is that it is not a worthwhile business tool – that it lacks the power and the software to really add value to the business man or woman who wants to include their mobile phone as part of their business activities.

But this is a criticism that has become outdated – and yet people still peddle it as truth.  Let us look at just why the accusation that the iPhone is no use as a business tool is one that is incorrect and why you should start looking for best iphone deals today!

The iPhone as a business tool

One of the major reasons for the popularity of this ‘fact’ is that the iPhone DID used to have a technological handicap when it comes to being used for business.  It lacked the processing speed to run multiple applications, or complex ones.  But the most recent upgrade – the iPhone 3GS, has changed that by dramatically improving the hardware.

Another issue was that the old, generation 1 iPhone lacked real web capabilities.  The reliance on WAP protocols meant that it was underpowered when it came to using cross internet software that required high bandwidth.  This has again been solved in recent upgrades.

Equally important to the rise of the iPhone as a business tool has been the gradual development of business essential applications.  The iPhone has developed from a web platform for those who want to play around to one capable of running software that can have a huge benefit to business users.

Applications including

* Accessing email servers for emails in real time
* Interacting with a companies database for contact management
* Running spreadsheets
* Providing a Pdf reader to allow reports to be read on the move

And much more besides.  It provides a mobile platform that allows users to access their business needs whilst on the move – important for many different types of business people.

New Nokia Lumia Phones

Nokia phones seem to have been at the forefront of mobile phone design and development in the last year or so. Their most recent innovation – the Lumia range – seems to be commanding excellent sales figures in the European market. The Nokia phones that carry the Lumia badge are some of the best designed phones ever. Their large screens stretch all the way across the front panel, showing little of the unglamorous plastic edgings of some of their rivals.

The Lumia range is built in collaboration with Microsoft, and they are Nokia’s first Windows phones to be released. Critics have praised the phones endlessly for their browsing abilities and intuitive operation.

The Lumia phones equipped with Windows Phone 7 are doing especially well in Austria and Germany. In Austria the Lumia 800 is a best seller whilst Germany received 200,000 of the Lumia 800 at the end of 2011.

Nokia phones – both cell phone and smart phone – are the biggest sellers in the world with a market share of just under 24%. The mobile phone market has been revolutionised in recent years; it’s become hard to tell whether a ‘phone’ is more of a phone or more of a ‘tablet’ designed to incorporate the full multi media package. Web browsing, social networking and mobile purchasing have emerged as central to a modern phone buyers demands.

To compete into the future, Nokia phones need to challenge the smart phone market and if the Lumia’s current sales are anything to go by, this seems on the cards. The Lumia 710 is an affordable smart phone with a 1.4 GHz processor and a Windows operating system. The slightly more advanced 800 challenges preconceptions of intuitive technologies even further.

The Nokia Lumia 900 is set to take off in the US as a rival to Apple, and the UK looks set to receive the Lumia 910. The future looks bright for Nokia phones and their new range made in conjunction with Microsoft could cement the place of Nokia phones as the world’s number one provider.

LG Optimus 2X – extreme dual core performance in a slim and attractive body

LG had one of the most interesting presentations at the International Consumer Electronics Show in Las Vegas this year. They have announced and shown a few new smartphones in their Optimus line, one of which was the 2X – one of the first dual core smartphone to hit the market in early spring.

Stylish smartphone that packs a punch

The Optimus 2X is your typical slab-style smartphone, which looks great with the rounded edges and slim design a la iPhone 4 with a bigger display, but the real show stopper is the internal hardware: this smartphone is powered by the NVidia Tegra 2 platform, with a dual core processor and the most powerful video graphics adapter to date – a mobile GeForce.

This guarantees that the 2X will be faster than any current devices for a long time – the jump in performance is very high, with the smartphone being at least twice as fast in apps, games AND video playback/recording. Nothing has been said about the amount of RAM, however it is safe to assume that there are at least 512 MB, which is enough to run almost anything you need and still have plenty left.

Lots of storage space and enough features to satisfy everyone

The Optimus 2X also has a lot of memory – 8 GB  are integrated into the phone, while the user gets the ability to complement that with an external micro SD card (currently up to 32 GB, but 64 GB ones are on the way), so you can potentially have 40 and more GB of memory on this device.

Along with the raw processing power come a lot of useful features, which are pretty standard on today’s smartphones, with a few exceptions. In addition to the usual support for Wifi N, Bluetooth, accelerometer, 3.5 mm audio jack and others you get a gyroscope sensor, support for up to 21 Mbps HSDPA speeds, a proximity sensor that turns the screen on/off when you take a phone call, and support for 1080p video recording using the 8 megapixels camera on the back.

1080p video recording and HDMI out port deserve a separate mention

The latter actually works very well – there’s no lag or artifacts on the video and you can film for as long as your memory can hold. There’s also a 1.3 megapixels camera on the front for video calls and a HDMI-out port for outputting all your pictures, videos and anything else to the big screen (you can even play games using the Optimus 2X like a gaming console – it’s pretty amazing).

With all these features and especially the power hungry processor, you’d expect the Optimus 2X to last less than a few hours of use, but you’ll be surprised when you hear that it can actually last just as long as any other smartphone around – the Tegra 2 is simply that effective (well, the 1500 mAh battery helps, too).

The LG Optimus 2X will sport the Android 2.2 OS, with an upgrade to 2.3 in the following months. It is a smartphone worthy of attention when it comes out later this year, and if the price is right, it can become a best seller – you’ll definitely not need another one for at least a couple of years.

Mobile Firefox is today only available for software platforms that runs on the Nokia N810 Internet Tablets. The work to bring a new mobile firefox version for Nokia smartphones and Samsung smartphones has began.

When Mozilla started to work on a mobile version of the popular browser Firefox, they named it Fennec. The work to develop a new version of Fennec, that will be able to run on S60 platforms, has began.

Christian Sejersen, Director of Mobile Engineering at Mozilla Corporation, revealed on his blog that Mozilla need to have a presence on the Symbian platform. The new version of Fennec will likely be available in the summer 2009. Sejersen also mentioned on his blog that they can´t deploy Fennec for iPhone, RIM and Android for technical or licensing reasons.

As I mentioned above so is Mobile Firefox so far only available for software platforms that runs on the Nokia N810 Internet Tablets. To give people who don’t have a Nokia Internet Tablet the ability to localize, experiment and build add-ons, they have realeased a package for PCs that runs on Windows, Linux or OS X.
