Getting into the world of e-readers is always a good thing, especially if you’ve always wanted to expand the amount of books that you honestly read. A lot of people think that they’ve fallen out of love for books, when the truth is that they’ve just fallen out of love for constantly having to check out new books or pick up a new stack of bulky books. In addition, reading on an electronic device saves a lot of space. Everyone probably has at least one friend whose house seems devoured by books. Those days can be gone forever if you opt to get an e-reader. And just because you decide to read books electronically isn’t going to mean that you never pick up a magazine or a newspaper or even a regular book. But you have to admit — the idea of electronic reading is pretty straightforward and convenient, isn’t it?

Well, if you get the right e-reader, it’s definitely something that’s straightforward. We really like the Nook Color because it’s more than just a straight e-reader — it’s more like a tablet than anything else. You’re going to be getting something pretty powerful that will open up a whole new multimedia based world to you. And that’s something to be excited about. 50 years ago, this type of technology would have never existed.

So, why are we so crazy about the Nook Color? There are a lot of features and specs to appreciate when it comes to this device.

We can start with the touchscreen. It’s an ultra-responsive 7-inch multi-touch screen which displays 16 million colors. The colors pop brightly, which means that reading is going to be a joy rather than a torture. While not everything you read will have color to it, that doesn’t mean that you won’t give it a good work out. Some people really like being able to read magazines on their Nook Color instead of having to sit and read something in black and white. You will also be able to check out neat magazines as well as newspapers for 14 days for free — and there’s even video to go with it.

The Nook is from Barnes & Noble, which boasts itself as the world’s largest bookstore. There are nearly 2.5 million titles to choose from. There are free samples that you can check out, and when you’re ready to purchase something else, you can get it via Wi-Fi in a matter of seconds — or a few minutes in realistic time. There’s Free Fridays that let you check out the best that Barnes & Noble feels you should be looking into, which means that there’s always something to read.

You can increase the text size to make it bigger, and you can even choose what type of font that you get. If you want to read in landscape format, you can do that. You just turn the tablet around and it will automatically update itself.

There are plenty of apps that you can download for your Nook as well. Can’t get enough Angry Birds? Download it! If you want to play Scrabble, you can download that too. There are a few games and apps that are pre-loaded to your Nook Color, so you don’t have to feel deprived.

What we really liked what Wi-Fi being built in — it made for a really fast Web browsing experience, and we also got to Facebook pretty quickly as well. It’s also easy to look at email, and let’s face it — everyone looks at email at least once a day.

Pandora is one of the best apps for the Nook, and it’s pretty easy to get the other big music players on there as well. Grooveshark is possible, as well as Rhapsody and MOG if that’s what you want. If you already have plenty of tunes, you can listen to them with the built-in music player.

Netflix now plugs into your Nook Color — you can watch movies and TV shows. You already have to make sure that you are a subscriber of Netflix, but there is a 30 day trial that’s included.

Nook Comics are also available now, and they definitely take full advantage of that big, vibrant screen.

Battery life is good on the Nook, with roughly 8 hours of battery life. This is perfect for road warriors that find themselves with hours to kill before a flight. With a Nook Color, you won’t be bored — how cool is that?

You can swap books with other Nook people, and even if you start reading and then have to do something else — Nook makes sure that you never miss your spot.

Let’s say that something happens to your Nook Color — you can always get free Nook Color support at any of the stores. There’s also free Wi-Fi there and special offers on books and cafe treats.

This means that really when you think about it, there are a lot of features to like about the Nook Color. Should you get one? Considering that it’s running under an Android platform and has plenty of available book and document formats (ePub, PDF, CBZ, XLS, DOC, PPT, TXT, DOCM, XLSM, PPTM, PPSX, just to name a few) as well as video formats (Flash, MP4), it’s safe to say that the Nook Color is definitely worth it. Check it out today!

Thermal imaging cameras can be used in a number of different circumstances to visualise temperature that cannot be seen by the naked eye, there is technology within the cameras that is quite fascinating, as is the numerous applications that they can be used for.

The only drawback of the piece of equipment is that they are very expensive to purchase, but it possible to hire them out which is probably the best option. If you hire test equipment, it means you can use them only when they are needed. This means you can save money and not have a piece of equipment lying around not getting used for most of the year.

A thermal imaging camera is an infrared or thermo graphic type of camera which forms an image of radiation which to the naked eye is invisible; it does this in a very similar way as a regular camera would take a photograph of visible light.

The camera also takes different wavelengths compared to a normal camera. A thermal imaging camera captures wavelengths as long as 14,000 nanometres compared to the visible-light cameras which work in a range between 450 – 750 nanometres.
Infrared cameras are not very different compared to digital cameras today. The lens is used to bring in the information, but instead of visible light, it detects radiation. The detected radiation is then converted into electrical symbols which are then combined to form the image.

Colours ranging from red, orange and yellow indicate hot temperatures. They also indicate cooler temperatures which show up in shades of greens and blues. Knowing the differences in temperature within a particular area is hugely helpful for individuals and businesses alike.

An effective way to diagnose structural and building problems is to hire one of these specialised cameras. An expert company can offer cameras that help determine if plumbing work has effectively fixed a leek, or detect rising damp which would otherwise go untreated.

For that reason, hiring one of these cameras when needed rather than purchasing and maintaining one is an effective way to take advantage of this useful technology without having to make a large upfront investment.

Hiring a durable and easy-to-use thermal imaging camera from a reputable company can help quickly diagnose problems before they are visible and ensure they are corrected as quickly as possible.

Using these cameras, businesses and individuals can keep an eye on things they could not see otherwise.

We all love technology — it has a strange way of making lives even better than we expect. However, the last thing that you want to do is find yourself being unable to enjoy technology because you don’t have any idea whether or not it’s going to be a good buy. For most people, their love of technology far exceeds the budget that they have for the technology in question. Nobody wants to spend their hard earned money on things that don’t satisfy their needs. So how do we keep that from happening? We turn to reviews to make the decisions for us, really. Now, that’s not to say that we don’t think about other things, but generally speaking, before we put down good money for the latest and greatest techie toys, we’re going to make absolutely sure that we can actually get what we’re looking for. That’s where the reviews come in, and they can help you actually make up your mind.

For example, let’s say that you really want the Kobo eReader Touch. Do you really want to just run out and get it without seeing how other people liked it? Not at all. You’re going to need to step up and look at Kobo eReader Touch review before you decide whether or not to buy it. You always want to see what type of experience that other people had before shelling out the money.

Now, we’re actually pretty impressed by the Kobo eReader Touch, to be quite honest. It’s a nifty piece of technology that can really allow you to accomplish quite a bit. But you’re going to need to keep it all in perspective. The last thing that you want is to find that things don’t go the way that you need them to. What we find important in an eReading device is going to be a bit different than what you might find important in an eReading device. That’s really the way it’s going to have to be honestly if you’re serious about finding a quality product that you’re going to actually enjoy for a long time.

Yes, the excitement is always there when you realize that you’re actually in the market for a new technical gadget or two. Yet if you really take the time to plan out your purchase, it goes without saying that you’re going to have a lot better purchase than if you just rushed in. With technology, you can often have a shorter return policy than other products, which means that it’s even more important to have your head screwed on straight with every technical product that comes on. Why not make sure that you get started today? You’ll definitely be glad you did!

Ah, Apple makes a lot of mobile products to love — the iPhone and the iPad are the stars of the show, of course. The iPod Touch is still one that gets a lot of love, which is a good thing — it’s a great device. But what if you actually want to type something? Trying to work with a virtual keyboard for those in-depth typing sessions just isn’t going to cut it. Whether you want to write your masterpiece on your tablet or talk for a while to friends on instant messenger (without having to give your thumbs a work out) — the time is now to get a great keyboard.

There was a time in Apple history where you couldn’t hook up a keyboard. This definitely put the Apple suite of products at a disadvantage over the BlackBerry. However, it was really only a matter of time before Apple caught up to the trend.

You can pair a lot of different Bluetooth devices to the iPhone and the iPad. The models change so much that you’re better off searching for it, but that doesn’t mean that you can’t find what you’re looking for eventually.

When it comes to searching for a keyboard, you really want to find a model that will roll up or fold downward so that the keys are protected. When you’re on the go, anything that can help you actually protect your accessories is a good thing.

We can’t stress that enough — you really need to make sure that you’re doing everything in your power to protect your keyboard, power supplies, and other accessories that you need for your mobile life. It might seem like it’s a little too much work, but you’ll thank us when all of the keys on your keyboard still work. This is actually one of the biggest complaints that many techies have about Apple oriented keyboards. However, it has to be said — if you take good care of the keyboard, the keyboard will take good care of you.

If you’re thinking about getting a keyboard but you’re worried that you’re really not going to get that much out of it, don’t worry. You will. Trust us on that.

Good luck and happy shopping!

Tablets. No, we’re not going back to the Stone Age here. We’re just talking about the latest and greatest technology circling the market. A lot of people have heard of the Blackberry Playbook, the Apple iPad (and now the iPad 2), as well as the Galaxy Tab which is an Android product. So there are a lot of choices out there, and that means that you actually need to think about a little more than just the super cool, super shiny factor that comes with just about any tech gadget on the market. When it comes to hold hard cash being on the line, you need to really think about a few things.

One of the first things people think about is the e-reading experience, and there’s definitely a reason for that. The rise of the Kindle has reminded people that they can indeed read in pleasure on the go, but that doesn’t meant hat you want to do nothing but read. Tablets do make great e-readers, and the text is very legible. A lot of people would rather read a PDF on a tablet than on a BlackBerry, and we really don’t blame them.

Another target group that loves tablets right now are traveling businesspeople, like salespeople and other folks. It’s easier to lead a customer through a presentation or show off a website with a tablet, not to mention looking at calendars and photo slideshows.

Replacing an old laptop with a tablet that can go wherever you need to go can be a good thing, but if you type a lot you’re still going to be better off with a regular laptop for travel than a tablet. Yes, you can type of a tablet but you’re going to be working with a virtual keyboard. If you’re a writer, that’s going to be headache waiting to happen. You’re still better off going with the traditional over the shiny new technology. It’s just about knowing what you want and need in a system, and going for that system.

Tablets are really good for travel though in the sense that the smaller form factor can go where you god, and there’s usually Wi-Fi and 3G networks just about everywhere you will probably be going. Even if you travel overseas, you’re going to find yourself having connectivity. Don’t worry — it’s designed that way on purpose. Rock on.

Road warriors that expect to put in a hard hitting day of work really need to realize that this is not something that will be suitable for their lifestyle. Again, it’s the typing factor. However, this is nice for when you’re in the hotel and you want to watch your movies or if you’re on a road trip and you need something to entertain the children with. It’s just a matter of knowing what you want, of course.

So, should you pull the trigger and get a tablet? Sure, why not? You just need to figure out what’s going to fit into your tech budget and read some reviews. There’s nothing like looking at the individual user experience in order to figure out where you stand.

Now is the perfect time to explore, so get out there!

Decisions, decisions. Do you wait for a piece of technology to go on sale during the usual sales rushes, or do you go ahead and get it because you need to use it now? With the holiday season about to be in full swing, this is a question that more and more people are honestly asking each other. It’s not because we’re into being materialistic, but nobody wants to miss out on a good deal.

The trouble is that the typical Black Friday sales are getting weaker and weaker over time. The recession has hit retailers hard, and that means that they’re going to have to cut back on the type of inventory that gets cut. Once those doorbusters go out the window, you’re left with inventory that really isn’t all that great. Sure, there’s going to be some legendary deals to be had if you really want them, but the truth is that you’re better off thinking about the bigger picture than just more technology that you don’t need.

For example, the Kindle Fire is coming out soon — November 2011 to be exact. That’s right around the corner, and that’s something that a lot of hardcore eReader fans have been looking forward to. Does that mean that they should suddenly stop getting excited and just wait for Black Friday? Sure, the Kindle Fire might be out in time for a good BF rush, but you’re better off striking while the iron is hot — and you have the money to do so.

Why? Well, things happen. People change. Things come up. You always want to make sure that you have things in place when you want them, not when you think the price is going to go down. There’s going to be a high demand for a lot of technical gear this year, and if you don’t strike fast, you’re going to find yourself left out. And really, who wants to be -that guy-, anyway?

You’re a lot better off going ahead and figuring out what you want to do with your technology purchases, and then going for it from that angle.

Shopping online is already a great way to cash in on good deals. Sites like FatWallet.com and DealofDay.com give you the 411 on what deals are going on, and long time members of both forums will tell you whether or not the technology is even worth it. If that’s not enough for you, there’s always Woot.com, which rewards people that act today — not on some date later down the line in the future.

What you do with your technology is up to you. If you want to purchase today, then do so — nobody is stopping you. If you want to take the risk of low inventory or even sold out virtual shelves, then take the risk. Either way, the only person that can give you the final verdict is you. Hang in there!

LG had one of the most interesting presentations at the International Consumer Electronics Show in Las Vegas this year. They have announced and shown a few new smartphones in their Optimus line, one of which was the 2X – one of the first dual core smartphone to hit the market in early spring.

Stylish smartphone that packs a punch

The Optimus 2X is your typical slab-style smartphone, which looks great with the rounded edges and slim design a la iPhone 4 with a bigger display, but the real show stopper is the internal hardware: this smartphone is powered by the NVidia Tegra 2 platform, with a dual core processor and the most powerful video graphics adapter to date – a mobile GeForce.

This guarantees that the 2X will be faster than any current devices for a long time – the jump in performance is very high, with the smartphone being at least twice as fast in apps, games AND video playback/recording. Nothing has been said about the amount of RAM, however it is safe to assume that there are at least 512 MB, which is enough to run almost anything you need and still have plenty left.

Lots of storage space and enough features to satisfy everyone

The Optimus 2X also has a lot of memory – 8 GB are integrated into the phone, while the user gets the ability to complement that with an external micro SD card (currently up to 32 GB, but 64 GB ones are on the way), so you can potentially have 40 and more GB of memory on this device.

Along with the raw processing power come a lot of useful features, which are pretty standard on today’s smartphones, with a few exceptions. In addition to the usual support for Wifi N, Bluetooth, accelerometer, 3.5 mm audio jack and others you get a gyroscope sensor, support for up to 21 Mbps HSDPA speeds, a proximity sensor that turns the screen on/off when you take a phone call, and support for 1080p video recording using the 8 megapixels camera on the back.

1080p video recording and HDMI out port deserve a separate mention

The latter actually works very well – there’s no lag or artifacts on the video and you can film for as long as your memory can hold. There’s also a 1.3 megapixels camera on the front for video calls and a HDMI-out port for outputting all your pictures, videos and anything else to the big screen (you can even play games using the Optimus 2X like a gaming console – it’s pretty amazing).

With all these features and especially the power hungry processor, you’d expect the Optimus 2X to last less than a few hours of use, but you’ll be surprised when you hear that it can actually last just as long as any other smartphone around – the Tegra 2 is simply that effective (well, the 1500 mAh battery helps, too).

The LG Optimus 2X will sport the Android 2.2 OS, with an upgrade to 2.3 in the following months. It is a smartphone worthy of attention when it comes out later this year, and if the price is right, it can become a best seller – you’ll definitely not need another one for at least a couple of years.

Adobe’s Photoshop is definitely the number one photo editing software on the market, and the latest version CS5 brings in so many more features, you’ll simply remain amazed at what it can do. Even though all of this means the interface is a bit cluttered, that is nothing compared to the possibilities it gives to photographers and other people whose profession includes editing any kind of images.

Of course, web designers, who have to work with websites that are composed of 50% images every single day, couldn’t just look from the side and got in on the action. And guess what, Photoshop can easily accomplish all of their tasks, too! If you’re striving to become a professional web designer or photographer, you’ve most definitely already been told to acquire a version of this wonderful software.

But the main problem with it is that it costs quite a lot of money, and if you’re just starting out or are simply an amateur that needs to do a couple of edits per month, you may not want to shell out those money.

With that in mind, a lot developers got together to create free alternatives to Photoshop, some of which accomplish the same things at the same quality, and yet are completely free. Here is a list of the most popular Photoshop alternatives that you can find on the Web.

GIMP.

GIMP is the most popular free alternative to Photoshop, and I’d be very surprised if you haven’t heard of it until now. It’s got every feature that Photoshop has and therefore, can accomplish any image editing task you throw at it. From simple effects to editing huge photographs with dozens of layers and masks, GIMP can do it all. The only gripe of most new users is the unfamiliar interface, which is pretty hard to use. But now, this can easily be fixed using the open source and free GIMPShop, which transforms the menus to be exactly like those in Photoshop. Install them both and you practically get a free clone of Photoshop!

Paint.NET.

This application, built on top of Microsoft’s abandoned Paint.net project, is a wonderful photo editing tool that can do 90% of all tasks you may need. It’s got advanced support for layers, a ton of tools to modify your pictures, a lot of integrated special effects and a nice interface that is pretty easy to use – if you’re an amateur or moderate user, this is everything you’ll ever need.

Picasa.

Picasa is a much lighter alternative to Photoshop and the above two apps. It is free, it’s made by Google, it looks gorgeous with all the AJAXy special effects, and it lets you do any kind of basic edits on all of your photographs – what else do you need?

PhotoScape.

PhotoScape is a great free photo editor that is very similar to Picasa, except it has a relatively uglier interface and it doesn’t come with an integrated photo viewer. But for the main task of editing images, it’s pretty good: it gives you all the basic features like resizing, cropping, drawing, adjusting gamma and color levels and other things, plus a couple of unique features like the batch editor, which lets you quickly resize or otherwise modify dozens of picture with just a few clicks.

VCW VicMan’s Photo Editor.

Vicman’s Photo Editor may look a bit old, but it is still a very nice image editing tool for Windows. It has all the basic features you may need (similar to Picasa or Photoscape), and the only thing that is bad about it is the old-looking interface (which is understandable, as its code dates back to the days of Windows 2000).

Pixlr.

Pixlr is an amazing display of new technologies, and Software as a Service in general. It is an online photo editing application that has a very Photoshop-like interface and allows you to do most of the things you need when editing any image. You get layers and masks, a clone tool, color correction tools, brushes for drawing, a text tool and a lot of other useful stuff. The only bad thing about it is that it needs a speedy Internet connection to work smoothly, but if you have anything more than a 1Mbit upload and download connection, you can easily use it without problems.

Photofunia.

Photofunia is not technically a photo editing service or application, but it is worth mentioning because it has quite a lot of great and fun special effects. You just upload a photo, select a special effect (like putting your face on posters in a city, with famous persons, on various currency bills, and other similar stuff), wait for the service to process your picture (which takes only a few seconds), and then download it to your computer with the effects applied. It’s very interesting to use and you can print the photos as posters or share it with your friends on various social sites (which is how Photofunia actually became popular).

You can save quite a lot of money by choosing to go with any of the above apps for your photo editing needs instead of buying a full copy of Photoshop or even Elements. Using a couple of them together will certainly give you all the features and possibilities you may need.

Drupal is an excellent Content Management System for any kind of website. Webmasters use it for blogs, e-commerce and membership sites, forums, video streaming sites and a lot of other purposes. There are also a lot of plug-ins (called modules) available that can extend a site’s functionality to great levels and it’s very easy to create your own (which a lot of companies using Drupal actually do).

Drupal is easy to manage and update, and the only bad thing about it is that there are very few good themes available for it, because of the mixed code used which web designers don’t like. Joomla is much better in that regard. But that doesn’t mean you can’t have a great Drupal theme. On the contrary, you can create any kind of theme, with beautiful navigation and graphics, but you’ll need some time to learn the coding method. A lot of the companies using Drupal (and those are big companies, for example, Warner Bros, MTV UK, Sony Ericsson and others) use their own, custom built themes and modules, and it’s very hard to see they run the Drupal core underneath all of those things.

But if you’re just starting out, you can easily get one of the free themes or buy one of the premium ones (which are more beautiful and with more features), and make a great site using additional modules.

Here are some Drupal modules that any owner of a site using this CMS must use to get the best possible experience:

WYSIWYG.

Drupal comes with no integrated visual editor (like TinyMCE) by default, and you have to install one manually if you want a god way to edit your pages. You probably don’t want to edit all the code in a page (including simple HTML tags like and line breaks) manually unless you’re a hardcore programmer or designer. The WYSIWYG module gives you the ability to install and use any visual editor (even the new CK editor) you want, so it’s definitely a must have plugin.

Views.

You’ll need this module if you want your site to be more than just a collection of plain-looking pages. It’s definitely a must for any complex site, as the default page and node structure is hard coded in Drupal, so you have to use external code to modify and customize the look and feel of any page. You can also set different views and sidebar items for different pages, insert social bookmarking icons and do a lot of other things using the Views module.

XML Sitemap.

This is a great module for SEO and a must have if you want your site to rank high in any search engine. It allows you to create sitemaps of your site and submit them to Google and other SE’s. As you may know, this is a good first step to get all of your pages found and indexed by those search engines, and it should be done regularly, at least once a week or month, depending on how often you update your site with new content.

CAPTCHA.

Spam is an important issue for every website to consider. If your site has the possibility to post user comments (which equals 99% of all sites online) and guest posts, you must have some sort of protection or you’ll get bombarded with thousands of spam comments and emails (using your contact form) every day. The CAPTCHA module is the first line of protection, and one of the most effective ones. You probably know what it is (an image with scrambled letters that only a human can read), but you should also remember that they can and are frequently cracked, so you have to always keep this module up to date.

Bad Behavior.

This is another great Drupal module to combat spam. It works by analyzing all of the incoming HTTP requests and rejecting the ones that seem like spam (contain many links to bad sites, contain unrecognized words, come from bad IP addresses, etc.). It is very effective, and if used together with the CAPTCHA module, can stop 99% of all the spam, with the remaining 1% being manually posted spam by hired people, which is impossible to stop by automated means and needs to be moderated by a person.

These modules are a must have for any Drupal site owner, and probably the best thing about them is that they’re compatible with over 95% of any other modules, so you don’t have to worry about incompatibilities. Even if there is an incompatibility, you can easily fix the problem by deleting the module using FTP. Check them out and be amazed by the power of Drupal!
