iPhone Hints and Tips
The one advantage of owning an iPhone is the ability to customize various settings in order to suite your needs. There are a large number of hints for optimising the use of an iPhone, but this article consists of 10 useful hints and tips for iPhone users intended to make your life much easier.
Tip 1 – Scrolling long web pages
By clicking the menu bar you will be scrolled all the way up. This is very convenient when you are in the process of viewing long web pages.
Tip 2 – Restoring icons to factory settings
It often happens that a person may mess up the icons and need to restore the original factory settings. Doing this is as easy as navigating to Settings > General > Reset. Here you can select the ‘Reset Home Screen Layout’ option. A popup will appear asking for confirmation. Simply confirm and your settings will be restored.
Tip 3 – Quitting applications
Ever experienced the situation where your iPhone just seems to hang? Then you had the need to restart the phone? Well, in future attempt clicking and holding down the Home key for several seconds. By doing this you will force any running application to quit, without the need of restarting your iPhone.
Tip 4 – Sharing URL’s
Need to share a website with someone? With the iPhone there is no need for you to type in the whole URL of a website. Simply tap the Address Bar and then tap Share. You will notice a new email message opening, which will contain the URL. Simply choose your recipients and send the message.
Tip 5 – Where will links take me?
Don’t simply click a URL before you are sure where you are going to be taken! While in Safari you can hold your finger on a link, instead of tapping it. This will show the underlying URL of a link where you will be taken. This can also be done in mail.
Tip 6 – Phoning numbers in Safari
If you find a number in Safari, which you are interested in dialing, simply tap that number and iPhone will start dialing it.
Tip 7 – Marking a read message as unread
Ever tried to mark a read message as unread? Did this appear impossible to do? In order to do this, simply do the following: While viewing a message tap Details. This will reveal a ‘Mark as Unread’ option. Simply tap that. The next time you view your inbox the message will appear as unread.
Tip 8 – Saving an email to your drafts folder
Ever started an email and could not finish it? Had the need to save the email and complete it later? In future, simply click cancel, then save the message. It will be saved, automatically to your drafts folder.
Tip 9 – More than just .com
Keep the .com key pressed down for a few seconds and you will find more options. You will be able to change it to .org, .net and if you have an international keyboard installed your own country code!
Tip 10 – iPhone Syncing
Many people state that syncing an iPhone with other data on your Mac is impossible. There is indeed a way around this! Each contact has a notes field. Simply create a fake contact and paste any information you would like to keep with you in the notes field for that contact in your address book. One Sync later and all that info will be available!
